                                POISE
                                Flare Dance Ensemble Production 2007

Since its first production in 2002, Flare has grown and matured as an ensemble and now more than ever strives to attain professionalism in its performances. Our 6th year is marked with change and recognition within the university community for our development and success. Poise 2007 captured the ensemble's evolving grace, style, attitude, composure and elegance.

The production featured the many talents of our choreographers who brought to the stage everything from street hip-hop to classical ballet; as well as guest performances from the newly formed Flare Dance Company and familiar face Travel Art Company (who also performed in our 2004 production, Rhythmicity).

Very simply, life can be thought of as being made up of a series of rooms and the people we meet in those rooms. Some come and go...but stay just long enough for us to build a meaningful bond with, one which gets stronger over time.

Shapes & Silhouettes by Juliette Alcock & Suzanne Heng

                                Style: Contemporary

Dance is simply moving art. It is the formation and morphing of shapes and images designed with the human body. Artists have long used shadows and silhouettes, with their absence of interior detail, as a metaphor for the artistic soul. Similarly, dance can capture a glimpse of the inner-self. Life is a dance floor, so move to your own rhythm.

Can we see all there is in ourselves that is real? Can we come to an agreement with the different facets of our personality to have trust, faith, and acknowledge the truth in who we are and our relationship with the rest of the world?

I'm a Little Teapot/Hokey Pokey (Guest Piece) by Meah Velik-Lord

Cast: Travel Art Dance Company: Meah Velik-Lord, Rachel Orzech, Haruna Noda, Paul Michaelides, Patrick Kelly

                                Style: Abstract/improvisation/acrobatics

Originally performed in Travel Art Dance Company's "Heads, Shoulders, Knees, Toes" (2006/2007), these two pieces use popular children's dances as the inspiration for the choreography.

Movements sequences of two classic dances are abstrated and combined with choregraphy, improvisation and acrobatics to explore the physical language of our collective memories.

"I'm a Little Teaopot" is a completely improvised piece in which the dancer doesn't know before she goes on stage how the dance is going to take shape. "Hokey Pokey" is a high energy piece that is mostly choreographed.

                                Mirror mirror on the wall...

When you look into the mirror are you absolutely certain that it is you that is looking back? What happens when the feeling that you are being watched by someone else int he mirror suddenly becomes real and breaks free?

My dreams, hopes and tomorrows are too far out of sight but close to my heart. As I wade through the churning waters of the sea, I know they are there waiting patiently for me...at the other side of the shore.

This dance is rated 'S'. It contains strong, SPASTIC scenes featuring crazy dancers reliving their childhood game of 'cops and robbers' and may be disturbing to serious, technical dancers. Please watch at your own discretion.

Rising over a walking city, beating down on to the rippling sand, dipping behind the houses as shadows flit through the streets; and so another day draws to a close, the sun setting at the gates of the citadel...

"Maybe I'm a little bit over my head
I come undone at all the things he said
And he's so funny in his bright red shirt
We were all in love and we all got hurt
I sneak into his car's cracked leather seat
The smell of gasoline in the summer heat
Boy, we're going way too fast
